What happens when the US government decides that the greatest threat to society is its own population?

As the war on terror escalates, secret spy agency ATOM finds itself at the forefront of a revolutionary new trend in espionage. But after one of its own unexpectedly resigns, ATOM becomes trapped at the center of a generational crisis that threatens to undo everything America’s spy agencies have fought to accomplish. The new paradigm starts here.

The first graphic novel by creators Patrick Neighly, Jorge Heufemann and Anne Marie Horne, Subatomic has won accolades from every major comics reviewer. The book has been translated for overseas markets and is currently in development for a feature film with Hyde Park Entertainment and MGM/Sony.

INTERVIEWS
Author Patrick Neighly was interviewed about Subatomic for Newsarama.

NEWSARAMA: While you say you wanted to, basically, write kind of story that you wanted to read, did that entail you purposely put the guideline in your head not to make Subatomic a polemic about privacy and freedoms, and instead, focus on the action?

NEIGHLY: I don’t think Subatomic is about privacy, actually. You might be surprised to hear that, but it’s true. To me it’s about the right to opt out of the status quo altogether. In the book, Mark only fights back at ATOM after it disrupts his new life, and even then all he really wants to do is be left alone. All of the characters in the book are besieged by outside influences in some way. They all just want to be left alone. Even Agent Stone contemplates just packing it all in and living a normal life.

Stone is my favorite character in the book – he’s what Mark could be. And conversely he sees that Mark is what he could be. It’s a mistake to call Stone the book’s villain. It’s really a “man vs. nature” story. If I had tackled Subatomic in prose it probably would have been about him instead of Mark.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
Subatomic is a clever, oddly compelling tale built around concerns of privacy and freedom in the post-9/11 era. Deceptively calm and eminently readable, it’s rich in powerful unstated emotion. Call it a Three Days of the Condor for the Information Age…”
Kurt Busiek Astro City, The Avengers

“Here’s a tight little tale about a big messy world – and not too much unlike our own. These guys sure can spin a yarn, and left me hoping for a sequel.”
Douglas Rushkoff The Ecstacy Club

“A clever, SHIELD-style espionage tale brought to life in post-Dubya America.”
Brian K Vaughn Y: The Last Man

“Riveting. Thought-provoking. Orwell’s 1984 meets Total Recall with all that hybrid promises and more!”
Richard Metzger Disinformation

"One of the better OGNs I've read lately... It's a sharp little spy piece with clever, restrained writing and art to match."
Steven Grant, Permanent Damage

"Subatomic is a strong offering from a bunch of talented new creators, and it features a compelling character-based story that doesn't skimp on the cool ideas. Rated 9/10."
Randy Lander, The Fourth Rail

"I love the textured cover design, and the slick, high quality of the paper really makes this book look like what it is from cover to cover: professional. Rated 9/10."
Don McPherson, The Fourth Rail

"Heufemann has a crisp, no-frills style suited for an espionage thriller, and Neighly enlivens the proceedings with fairly strong dialogue and a refreshing camaraderie between Mark and his civilian friends... A strong, page-turning thriller with compassion, good pacing and excellent production value for a small publisher."
Chris Allen, Breakdowns

“I'd definitely keep an eye on Mad Yak Press and Neighly, because if they keep this up they're going far.”
Greg McElhatton, iComics

Subatomic has “Huge Sweeps Miniseries Event” written all over it. Done correctly, there should even be a sweet afterlife for Subatomic in DVD sales.”
Marc Mason, MoviePoopShoot

“A hiply packaged, tightly paced thriller that’s as thought provoking as it is entertaining.”
Doug Griffen, Digital Webbing

“Neighly, Heufemann, and Horne have all combined their individual skills to present a suspenseful and thought-provoking spy story. Four stars.”
Michael May, Comic World News

“It's action-adventure that makes the reader think, and it's one of the few entertainment books accurately raising the political questions of today. A real page-turner.”
Johanna Carlson, Comics Worth Reading

“An incredibly complex story offering a simplistic façade that belies its deeper meanings.”
Mike Bullock, Broken Frontier

“New creators smack a homer right out of the park.”
Brian Domingos, PopImage

Subatomic is a great book, all the more interesting considering the challenges facing any self-published book in today’s market. This is the type of smart, well-produced and entertaining yarn that would captivate the mainstream audiences who eat up inferior product like Robert Ludlum movie adaptations – if they knew it existed, that is. I predict bright futures for everyone involved in the production of this book.”
Tim O'Neil, The Hurting
